Inspired by successful initiatives at Minneapolis and Saint Paul Public Schools, Intermediate District 287's Equity and Inclusion Department launched an exciting "Grow Your Own" student internship program over Extended School Year. This program offered students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in education. Interns, who were paid like Educational Support Professionals (ESPs), began their journey with a two-day orientation then worked closely with teacher mentors to support classrooms. This summer, we had 6 incredible interns at North Education Center and South Education Center. Notably, 100% of these students identified as students of color. In the Intermediate Teacher Residency Apprenticeship Collaborative (ITRAC) program, teacher apprentices learn through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience. They apply knowledge gained in Related Technical Instruction (RTI) to their own classrooms, guided by experienced Journeyworkers (mentor teachers) who provide feedback and share insights into the day-to-day practices of teaching. With a job-embedded approach, apprentices gradually take on more responsibility, moving from observation to co-teaching and eventually leading. ITRAC is Minnesota's FIRST Registered Teacher Apprenticeship, which is a powerful blend of theory and practice that helps apprentices grow into confident, capable teachers.
