Inspired by successful initiatives at Minneapolis and Saint Paul Public Schools, Intermediate District 287's Equity and Inclusion Department launched an exciting "Grow Your Own" student internship program over Extended School Year. This program offered students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in education. Interns, who were paid like Educational Support Professionals (ESPs), began their journey with a two-day orientation then worked closely with teacher mentors to support classrooms. This summer, we had 6 incredible interns at North Education Center and South Education Center. Notably, 100% of these students identified as students of color. In the Intermediate Teacher Residency Apprenticeship Collaborative (ITRAC) program, teacher apprentices learn through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience. They apply knowledge gained in Related Technical Instruction (RTI) to their own classrooms, guided by experienced Journeyworkers (mentor teachers) who provide feedback and share insights into the day-to-day practices of teaching. With a job-embedded approach, apprentices gradually take on more responsibility, moving from observation to co-teaching and eventually leading. ITRAC is Minnesota's FIRST Registered Teacher Apprenticeship, which is a powerful blend of theory and practice that helps apprentices grow into confident, capable teachers. November is Minnesota’s month of giving hosted by GiveMN, and we need your help to meet our goal of raising $10,000. When students at South Education Center (SEC) present a need for clothing during the school year, especially during the long months of Minnesota winter, they can shop at the clothes closet for free. “Students feel valued when we make things available to them. Especially after COVID, students and families are facing how and where they spend their money, and clothes are not at the top of the list. When students' needs are met, they have an easier time learning,” said Ms. Tollefson, a speech language pathologist at SEC. Meet Shari, one of District 287’s school bus drivers. As we prepare for winter weather, she would like to remind our families and caregivers to make sure their students wear a winter coat on the bus, in case of a breakdown or emergency. Shari has 10 years of experience as a driver, but she also works as a photographer and with people in group homes.
